Tenblox is a ten building block learning system.  We believe that there are 10 building blocks to teach your preschool child to read and write.  Each block is made up of 2 to 3 skills.  Your child will learn each skill through consistent multiple repetition of activities.  Multiple repetition of activities teaches your child the skills that make up each block.  Combine the blocks and your child can read and write.

BASIC LISTENING SKILLS

Developing your child’s basic listening skills involves building their awareness of sound, distinguishing both environmental and speech sounds from one another, and practicing the process of hearing. In order to master adequate literacy skills, your child must be a good listener.

PHONEMIC AWARENESS

Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in spoken words. An important pre-reading skill, studies find that teaching phonemic awareness to children significantly improves their reading, reading comprehension, and ability to spell. Before children learn to read print, they need to be aware of how the sounds in words work.

ALPHABETIC PRINCIPLE

Your child’s reading development is dependent on their understanding of the alphabetic principle – the idea that words are made up of letters and letters represent sounds. Learning that there are patterned and predictable relationships between sounds and letters allows children to apply these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words, and to begin to read with fluency.

PREWRITING

Before your child can write, he must have the prerequisite fine motor skills necessary to use his wrist and hands properly and effectively. The first activities will help your child build strong fine motor skills, the coordination of the small muscles in his fingers and hands, which are necessary for ease and mastery of writing.
